ABC Radio Interview: "How to safely remove a paralysis tick has changed".
“The Australian tick is particularly good at provoking two very serious allergies, the Mammalian Meat Allergy and anaphylaxis, so it's essential they're removed correctly, to minimise the risk of these reactions. VMO at the Northern Beaches Hospital, Associate Professor Sheryl van Nunen warns the old days of pulling out a tick with household tweezers, or accidentally scratching it, are over. She says that technique results in an injection of tick saliva, putting the allergen directly into the bloodstream. Prof. Van Nunen says the best way to remove a tick is to kill it first by freezing it with an "ether spray" and letting it drop off. "Freeze it. Don't squeeze it".
