Fresh warnings over summer as tick numbers surge, raising risk of deadly meat allergy

Niki Burside, Journalist to the ABC News speaks with Mr Nigel Ellis who has been diagnosed with mammalian meat allergy. He discusses his potential life-threatening reaction following the accidental ingestion of mammalian meat. Mr Ellis who hopes by sharing his story, would help others avoid his fate.

Niki also speaks with Associate Professor Kevin Broady, Immunologist and TiARA Committee member discussing the importance of avoidance, prevention and the correct removal of ticks when bitten.

A/Prof Broady states; "Avoidance is the big issue — avoid being bitten to try and not exacerbate the problem.

He said it was crucial that if someone was bitten that they avoid using tweezers to remove it, as that risked squeezing the tick and releasing the toxins into the bloodstream.

Instead, he advised using a product that can be bought at pharmacies to freeze the tick and wait for it to fall off.”
